The Pi Kappa Alpha Educational Foundation recently presented the Martha E. Banfield Scholarship to Gamma Omicron Chapter’s Gordon M. Jones (Ohio, Gamma Omicron ’07). Jones was presented the award during the Gamma Omicron Alumni Association’s annual meeting, which was held during Ohio University’s 2008 Homecoming weekend.
The Martha E. Banfield Endowment at the Pi Kappa Alpha Educational Foundation was funded through a very generous planned gift from the late Norman F. Banfield (Ohio University, Gamma Omicron ’50) to honor the memory of his wife, Martha, and concurrently support academic and leadership excellence at his beloved chapter – Gamma Omicron. The Banfield Scholarship is awarded annually to a Gamma Omicron undergraduate who demonstrates a strong academic background. Candidates for this award must excel academically and must be serving or have served Gamma Omicron Chapter in a key position of leadership.
Jones serves Gamma Omicron Chapter as treasurer. Prior to this position, Jones was the chapter’s secretary. Academically, Jones is an accounting major and has been on the University’s Dean’s List each quarter. He is a member of Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society.
When asked about the impact that Pi Kappa Alpha has on his collegiate experience, Jones commented that “I have learned lessons with my brothers that I wouldn’t want to learn anywhere else. Pi Kappa Alpha has given me the opportunity to have leadership roles in a large, significant group, which has given me the confidence necessary to be a leader in every facet of my life. It has also given me something that I will always be able to look back on, stay in touch with, and be proud of on my campus.”
