John C. Hohlen (Missouri, Alpha Nu ’85) has co-developed a new fantasy golf game called www.ProTourFantasyGolf.com. Having just completed its inaugural season in 2008, the game has become a big hit amongst fantasy sports enthusiasts and golf fans alike. Over the past year, Pro Tour Fantasy Golf has been mentioned in the Wall Street Journal as well as on ESPN radio.
Hohlen, along with a couple of friends, created Pro Tour Fantasy Golf almost ten years ago after years of playing fantasy football together. “Back then, there weren’t any fantasy golf games on the Internet, so we came up with our own rules and ended up with this very unique game. Keeping track of lineups, standings and statistics became tedious through email. Cutting edge web programming technology has streamlined the process allowing Pro Tour Fantasy Golf to reach out to golf fans around the world.”
Fantasy golf is a niche game compared to widely popular fantasy football and baseball. However, compared to those games, fantasy golf takes very little time. But it can be just as exciting when you’re sitting in front of the TV on Sunday afternoon. In fact, it makes watching golf ten times as much fun; especially when Tiger Woods is out with a season ending injury.
The object of Pro Tour Fantasy Golf is to pick three golfers for each week’s professional golf tournament with the option to substitute one golfer with another after the second round. However, you can only use a golfer twice throughout the 24-week season. Whatever earnings each golfer wins is how many points you get. Each starting golfer wins you double earnings while each sub wins you single earnings. Each team gets six mulligans. A mulligan can be used to start a golfer a third time or to enter sub after the third round (Sunday).
Pro Tour Fantasy Golf offers two different types of contests. One is their weekly league format, in which participants enter a lineup each week for 24 weeks. For the more casual fan, they also offer a Majors+1 contest which consists of five tournaments over five months (The four majors plus the Tournament Players Championship). Bill Hunt (Missouri, Alpha Nu ’83) was the winner of their 2008 Majors+1 contest.
Hohlen lives in Chesterfield, Missouri with his wife and two children, Paige and Alex. He is a software architect for Enterprise Rent-A-Car. He can be reached via email at
