Texas Tech Alums Remember One of Their Own

Golf Tournament Supports Educational Trust Fund

This past June, Texas Tech Pikes attended the 6th Annual “Hamster Open” Golf tournament to benefit the Matt Hannum Educational Trust Fund. The golf tournament is a two day weekend event held each June at the Lakeway Golf Club, just outside Austin, Texas.

The “Hamster Open” has been held each year since Matt’s passing. Matt Hannum ’89 passed away July 2002 and is survived by his two children, Courtney and Zach. In 2003, a trust fund was set up to assist with their college education expenses and the annual golf tournament was established to raise donations and honor their friend and brother.

This year’s event was held at the Live Oak course where attendees were able to play golf in the morning and get out on Lake Travis for the afternoon. “I am thrilled that we have such great participation each year. We had a record turnout and were able to raise over $11,000 in contributions for the educational trust fund. It’s great to see how many of us have come together each year and see how charitable our Pike brothers have been. I look forward to attending this each year,” said Scott Nichols ’88. “We’re all excited to be here for Matt and it’s always great to see all the brothers supporting the cause”, said Kevin Parr ’83.

The golf tournament had close to 50 participants this past year and included Matt’s father Fred Hannum, brother John Hannum and children Courtney and Zach. “We are proud that Matt was a Pike and has such good friends to honor his memory and help with the kid’s college. It’s impressive to see what these guys are doing each year,” said Fred Hannum.

“Matt was one of the best guys you could have ever met. He always put a smile on everyone’s face. That’s why we all loved Matt and look forward to being at and supporting this important event each year”, said John Loutherback ’87.

The 7th Annual “Hamster Open” will take place in June 2009 in Lakeway Texas. As Courtney and Zach inch close to college, it is more important than ever to come out and support the event. If you knew Matt, come out and celebrate his memory with all of us that knew and loved him. If you did not have the pleasure of knowing Matt, come on out and enjoy fellowship with your Pike brothers and forge some new friendships.

The Epsilon Gamma Pikes also took the opportunity to use this time for a Tech Pikes alumni meeting.
