Pat Tillman was a Summa Cum Laude graduate from Arizona State University in 1998 as well as the Pac 10 Defensive Player of the year. The Arizona Cardinals drafted him in the seventh round and even though many questioned his ability to make the opening-day roster, he soon became the team’s starting safety. In 2000, he broke the franchise record for tackles with 224. Rather than cashing in on his success in 2002, he turned down a multi million dollar contract to serve his country in an elite Army Ranger Unit, and unfortunately died in 2004 while serving his country in Eastern Afghanistan.
The Pat Tillman Foundation supports developing tomorrow’s leaders today with their Leadership Through Action program at Arizona State University. May 3rd, 2008 marked the Third Annual Pat’s Run held at Leland High School in San Jose, California. Approximately 6,000 people were in attendance and the Delta Pi Pikes were responsible for the first mile marker of the 4.2 mile race, an honor they have held each year since its inception. Kurt Carrasquilla ’89 worked with Chapter President Dustin Brunzlick ’05 and Patrick McCauley ’06 to coordinate the volunteering effort. The Pikes had 40 brothers supporting the 1st mile marker as well as 10 active and alumni racers.
Special congratulations to John Van Metre ’01 who placed 19th out of 3,317 runners and covered the 4.2 mile course in 23:22 minutes. In the Super Clydesdales division, Daniel Atilano ’03 placed third with a time of 36:18 minutes.
